Linda Fruhvirt’s sensational run at the Miami tournament continues. In the 3rd round she faced Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Grand Slam winner. The young Czech gave a confident performance, giving her opponent no chance. At 6::2 and 3::0, the Belarusian gave up the match and Fruhvirtova scored another valuable scalp. Petra Kvitova also made it to the top 16 of the tournament.
Fruhvirtova also outplayed Azarenka
The draw of the 3rd round brought the Czech tennis player another tough opponent, which was Victoria Azarenka. The experienced Belarusian is a two-time Grand Slam champion from the Australian Open, and in earlier years she was also the world number one. However, the development of the match did not suggest that, the final result was very surprising.
the 16-year-old Fruhvirt entered the match with a lot of confidence, which was confirmed right from the start of the match. The Czech immediately gained the advantage of the break and took the lead 3: 0. She was able to maintain her high level of play in the next game, with Azarenka coming under even more pressure. The Czech outsider took her opponent’s serve twice more, winning the first set 6: 2.
Fruhvirtova’s perfect performance continued in the rest of the match. She clearly outplayed her opponent in the second set as well, while Azarenka’s game was not ideal at all. At 2::6 and 0::3 Azarenka gave up the match and Fruhvirtova scored another valuable victory.
The Belarusian’s run caused a big stir on social media as it was quite controversial. In the middle of the second set, Azarenka required medical treatment. When the umpire was alerted to the late arrival of the tournament physiotherapist, she opted for a crash and a quick exit from the court.
She didn’t even shake hands with her overwhelmer, which was a great disrespect to Fruhvirt. The comet of the tournament thus achieved the biggest win of her career in a truly bizarre fashion.
Excellent performance by Fruhvirt. She dominated the whole match, not even realizing how big a result she was playing for. She was in complete control of the match, giving her opponent no chance. A well-deserved qualification to the lifetime eight finals.
She moves into the top 200 in the rankings, currently 186th. Her meteoric rise can continue, she will face Spain’s Badosa in the eighth round. Her battle for the quarterfinals will take place in the early hours of Tuesday morning (the match is scheduled to start at 3:00).
Kvitova is the next eight finalist, the other Czech players are all in health
Petra Kvitova was the next Czech tennis player who could fight for a place in the top 16. The Czech “lvice” faced the American Davis in the 3rd round. The first set was quite even, with a lot of breaks from both sides. Kvitova was better in the end, winning it 7::5.
In the rest of the match she didn’t give her opponent any chance. Kvitova eventually won 7::5 and 6::1 and will face Kudermetova in the eighth round.
Two more of our tennis players (Siniakova, Muchová) were supposed to reach the 3rd round, but neither of them finished their match. Siniakova had to abandon her match at 0::6 and 0::1, because of health complications that prevented her from giving a 100% performance.
Karolína Muchová did not even enter the match against Osaka, so her opponent advanced to the eight finals without a fight. The Czech tennis player did not feel fit enough to continue in the tournament. However, she should be ready for the clay part of the season.
