Tennis tournament in Miami continues, women have played the 2nd round. A lot has happened in the women’s section. Linda Fruhvirt’s fairy tale ride continues, this time scalping Mertens, and Petra Kvitova also advances. The WTA is also celebrating a new world number one. How did the other Czechs fare? Who is the new queen of tennis?
Another lifetime achievement for Fruhvirtova
The talented Czech took on Mertens, the 24th player in the world, in the 2nd round. Linda Fruhvirtová had nothing to lose, she could only surprise. She gave a nervous impression in the beginning of the match and immediately lost her serve. However, she broke her opponent back in the very next game, which helped her a lot.
The Czech hope showed excellent tennis, she was more aggressive in the exchanges and managed to match her opponent in all aspects. The end of the first set was better managed by the Czech tennis player, she finally won the first set 7::5.
In the next set the Belgian added more. She was able to refine her game, she took away her opponent’s serve twice, on the other hand she held her serve quite sovereignly. The favourite won this set 6::2, and it was the deciding set that determined who would advance to the third round.
The opening set was the key moment. Fruhvirtova fought off several break points on her serves, which was very important. She didn’t let Mertens break, but rather put her under pressure. From 2:1 in the 3rd set onwards, it was an exhibition by the talented Czech.
Fruhvirtová did not concede a single game to her opponent and after winning 7::5, 2::6 and 6::1 she celebrates the biggest victory of her career. She moves up to the top 100 in the rankings (220th in the live rankings). In the 3rd round she will face another interesting opponent, she will face the champion Azarenka.
The new world number one will be Swiatek
Women’s tennis has a new world number one, Iga Swiatek. The former reigning champion Ashleigh Barty has asked to be removed from the rankings, which has greatly accelerated the change on the tennis throne. To move up to No. 1, the Pole only needed to win one match, which she did. After the Miami tournament, Swiatek will become the new world number one.
Kvitova also advances to the 3rd round, Bouzkova falls after a battle
Three more Czechs were to play on Friday. Unfortunately, Markéta Vondroušová didn’t enter her match, so only Kvitová and Bouzkova made it to the 2nd round.
The Czech champion had a duel against the outsider Burelová. It was not an easy match for Kvitova, but she confirmed her role as the favourite. After triumphing 6::1, 3::6 and 6::3, she will move on to play Davis in the eighth round.
A very prestigious duel awaited Maria Bouzkova. Her opponent was Badosa, the 3rd player in the world ranking. The Czech was a clear underdog, but she showed a very fighting and sympathetic performance on the court. After a 2 hour battle she fell to the favourite 5::7, 5::7 and is out of the tournament. Her performance in Miami was very positive, she definitely has a lot to build on. If she maintains her performance, she will continue to climb the rankings.
