Czech hope Linda Fruhvirtova managed to beat a player from the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time in her career at the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, when she stepped on Victoria Azarenka.
She managed to beat the two-time Australian Open winner 6:2 in the first set, and in the second set at 3:0 for Fruhvirtova, the Belarusian tennis player left the court without waiting for the physiotherapist.
For the Czech hopeful, a nice promotion to the eighth round and a move into the top 200 tennis players in the WTA rankings, for Azarenka the last match for some time.
Even before the tournament, Azarenka publicly stated that she was not at her best mentally. She even had her social media profiles deleted for a while.
After the fight with Fruhvirtova, the Belarusian declared that she shouldn’t have even been on the court. She said that the previous match cost her a lot of strength, but she wanted to play in front of a great crowd, which helped her to advance.
“But it was a mistake. My personal life has been extremely stressful these last weeks. I always look forward to challenges and tournament pressure, but now it was too much. I have to learn my lesson. I’ll take a break and hopefully I’ll be back,” expressed the current 16th player in the world rankings.
