Frenkie de Jong ignores Barcelona. Will he leave Catalonia?
Frenkie de Jong has had a new contract offer on the table from his current club for some time now, specifically from November. However, the Dutchman is not reacting to it. Speculation is beginning to circulate that not accepting the proposal could spell the end of the skilful midfielder’s time at Barcelona.
Frenkie de Jong has had a new contract offer on the table from his current club for some time now, specifically from November. However, the Dutchman is not responding to it. Speculation is beginning to circulate that not accepting the proposal could spell the end of the skilful midfielder’s time at Barcelona.
How is Frenkie de Jong doing at Barcelona?
After a fantastic season at Ajax, when the Dutch side reached the Champions League semi-finals and were minutes away from reaching the final, Frenkie de Jong opted for a move to Barcelona. The Catalan club paid 86 million euros for the 22-year-old midfielder.
It didn’t take long for the Dutchman to start starting in the starting line-up. After all, you don’t leave an €86 million signing on the bench. Over time, Frenkie de Jong has become an integral part of the club. The midfield line has gone down and up with the performance of the Dutch midfielder.
Two years ago, however, it was not far off for Manchester United, who offered up to €100 million for de Jong. However, the Dutchman decided to stay and continue to wear the Barcelona jersey. This move reassured the fans and confirmed that de Jong really wants to play for their favourite team.
Currently, de Jong has already played 204 games for the Catalan big club. He has netted 16 times and added 21 assists. Together with Gavi and Pedri, the future of Barcelona’s midfield is in safe hands.
What’s next for him?
The contract that the Dutch midfielder signed in 2019 will expire in June 2026. With a clause that increases his wages every year, de Jong’s current earnings stand at €700,000 per week. When multiplied, we find that the contract is very lucrative, as de Jong will earn over 57 million euros per year.
However, in November of the previous year, Barcelona sent a new contract proposal. The contract is supposed to be longer than the current one, however, it is essential to mention that de Jong would lose part of his current salary, as with 100% certainty the club management will not offer their player a contract with a weekly earnings of 700 thousand euros. The Catalan management is doing so mainly because of the club’s financial situation.
However, de Jong himself has ignored the proposal from the start. Why? He doesn’t want to lose part of his current salary. To give you an idea, Vinicius Junior signed a new contract with Real Madrid at the end of last year with a salary of “only” 400 thousand euros per week, almost twice the salary of de Jong.
Barcelona thus gave their charge an ultimatum, according to multiple sources . Either he extends his contract with a lower salary or he will be sold in the summer. Especially financially, the club would help itself. For the Dutchman, the bill would land several tens of millions of euros and still save on a huge salary. Manchester United or Tottenham are said to be interested in the player again, who have already sent an offer of around 60 million euros for the player.
