The French Ligue 1 is planning quite a big change. Twenty teams will no longer play in the league, but only eighteen. Italian Serie A has similar plans, but is waiting to make a statement.

The French Ligue 1 will become the first TOP league to change the number of participants. Four teams will be relegated next season.

Eighteen teams will then play in the French top flight from the 2023/24 season. What is the reason for these changes?

Finance, it is simply better for the league to have fewer participants, while also improving the quality of the competition.

It was Ligue 1 that fell behind Portugal’s Primeira Liga before the current season and is only sixth in the UEFA rankings.

However, Ligue 1 should not be the only top competition where the number of participants will be changed, as Italian Serie A has similar plans.

The latter has had 16 and 18 participants in the past, but raised that to 20 in the 2004/05 season. Now it is expected to go down to 18 again, just like Ligue 1.
