Frances Tiafoe is a 24-year-old tennis player from the USA. She is currently ranked 29th in the ATP rankings, but will improve her career best by reaching the final on Monday. If he were to win Sunday’s match, he would move up to No. 22.
Tiafoe played four matches in Estoril, all of which featured three sets. He even had to fend off three matchballs in the second set against Sebastian Korda. He also took on Lajovic, Borges and the in-form Davidovich Fokina.
On Sunday, his opponent will be twenty-one-year-old Sebastian Baez. The Argentine is at the tail end of the top six in the ATP rankings, however, as of Monday he has moved up to the 44th position.
The clay is Baez’s favourite surface. Last year, he managed to win an incredible 52 matches on it, thanks to which he conquered six Challengers. This year, he found a recipe for Garin, Verdasco and Rune on this surface.
In Estoril, he had slightly more acceptable opponents than Tiafoe. Sousa, Cilic, Gasquet and Ramos-Vinolas have all come his way. He spent a total of seven and a half hours on court, while his opponent spent almost ten hours.
This fact also makes the Argentine slightly favoured. However, Tiafoe is performing well in the local environment and will definitely not be without a chance to win. Therefore, we can expect an even match that could offer a three-set battle.
