France didn’t allow any surprises at the start of the Euros. The win against Austria was decided by an own goal

On Monday evening, the second match in Group D was played, which was a clash between France and Austria. The team of coach Didier Deschamps entered the match as a big favourite, which they managed to confirm.

France, specifically Kylian Mbappé, got the first major opportunity. After an independent break on the left side of the pitch, he decided to finish at the front post, but goalkeeper Patrick Bentz managed to react well and knocked the ball out for a corner kick.

Austria presented a very sympathetic impression and managed to threaten the French defence several times. In the 36th minute, Christoph Baumgartner found himself alone in front of the opposition goalkeeper, but was unable to beat him.

Two minutes later, Kylian Mbappé, the star of the French team, replied. His centre was unluckily knocked into his own net by Maximilian Wober for an own goal.

The 2022 World Cup silver medallists from Qatar went into the cabins with a 1:0 scoreline, but Ralf Rangnick’s men were certainly not ashamed of their performance.

Ten minutes after the change of sides, Mbappé, Real Madrid’s summer signing, advanced all alone on the Austrian goalkeeper. However, he did not handle the opportunity perfectly and his finish went wide of the three posts.

The pressure from France gradually increased and the French national team could not wait for a second accurate shot. Only the second match of the seventeenth European championship ended 1-0. However, the uncertain health of Mbappé, who had to be substituted due to a nosebleed, may be the reason for the win.

France is now within a point of the Netherlands, whom it will face on Friday 21 June. Austria, on the other hand, will face Poland in a battle to earn their opening points at the final tournament.
