If France wins this year’s Euro, its coach Didier Deschamps will become the greatest man in football history. And in his country, they can’t wait. But he was thwarted in a 0-0 draw by a young Dutch goalkeeper who set a new record.

Ironically, the first goalless draw of the tournament came in a clash between two very offensive teams. France , without the injured Kylian Mbappé, did receive a goal from the Netherlands, but it was taken away from Simons by an offside by his teammate Dumfries.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get any ball in the net. It was a high intensity game, I’m happy with that. But we have to work on our efficiency because we created enough chances to score,” France coach Didier Deschamps told uefa.com after the match.

It is the 55-year-old Bayonne native who, if his charges win the tournament overall, could become the first person in football history to win both the World and European Championships as a player and coach. But for that to happen, Griezmann and co. must score.

Verbruggen scores zero as the youngest goalkeeper in Euro history

“I would be more worried if we didn’t create chances. I think Antoine Griezmann played a better game than he did against Austria. Maybe his technical shortcomings were a little bit visible, which I’m not used to, but he will improve,” Deschamps said of his captain.

The Dutch have kept a clean sheet in seven of their last nine gamesthanks to the draw. Much of the credit goes to Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who at 21 years and 308 days became the youngest goalkeeper to record a clean sheet at a European Championship.

“I think we dominated the game in the sense that we created more chances. We’re a bit frustrated because we wanted the three points. But in the final tally, this draw will come in handy. We still have promotion in our hands,” revealed substitute Olivier Giroud on the match.

Both teams have four points each and the winner of the group will be decided in the final matches on Tuesday 25 June. Poland, who are without a point after two matches, cannot advance from Group D.
