What happened today in the Formula 1 race will leave a big mark in the memories of the spectators. A scene straight out of an action movie, a huge explosion, a subsequent fire, a burnt and half-burnt wreck of a monopod. As if by some miracle, Romain Grosjean escaped alive, and it seems without consequences.

“Romain is fine. He only had light burns to his hands and ankles. He’s obviously shaken up. I’d like to thank the paramedics who acted really quickly. It was scary, but the track marshals and the FIA people did a great job,” said Günther Steiner, the Haas team boss.

The horror incident happened shortly after the start. The Frenchman Grosjean clipped Daniil Kvyat’s car and it blew him into the barriers. He flew straight into them with a force of 53G, the car split in two and immediately exploded.

A huge fire erupted after the impact, from which Grosjean had to flee. A medical car arrived relatively quickly, along with the fire brigade. However, the fire was so intense that it was not easy to put it out.

After 20 seconds, Grosjean’s body emerged from the flames and he walked away.

The pilots are wearing coveralls made of the same material as the firefighters. They’re made of three to four layers of fireproof Nomex to survive the first 15 seconds in the worst heat.

The French rider was very lucky, all the saints were standing over him today. Similar situations are not new in Formula 1, the most famous case is probably Niki Lauda.

He lost his helmet in a collision with Lunger during the Nuremberg race and was left in the middle of flames with over 900°C.

He was rescued, but struggled with the consequences of the accident for the rest of his life. Grosjean seems to have come out of the whole situation with only a ‘scratch’, also showing how Formula 1 safety has improved.
