Japanese automaker Nissan, which joined the Formula E series in 2018, has announced a completely new driver duo for the upcoming generation of the championship. Maximilian Günther and Sébastien Buemi will be replaced by the French duo of Norman Nato and Sacha Fenestraz.
Nato returns to Formula E as a full-time driver. The winner of the E-Prix Berlin in the 2020/21 season for Audi has discontinued his involvement in the series. After a one-year break, however, he decided to continue his electric adventure. And he will do so with the Nissan team, which from next season onwards will completely take over the DAMS team for which it has only supplied engines in the last four years.
“I am very happy to be returning to Formula E as a full-fledged driver with the Nissan team,” revealed the 30-year-old Nato. “The third generation will be a new chapter for the championship and I am looking forward to testing and driving the all-new car.”
For Fenestraz, on the other hand, this will be his first full season in Formula E. He drove the electric formula in the final round of last season in Seoul, South Korea. In the second race, he replaced the injured Antonio Giovinazzi.
“It’s a dream come true. It will be a big step forward in my career. Not only will I be competing in the world championship for the first time, but I will also be competing against the best drivers in the world,” said an excited Fenestraz, who won the Japanese leg of the touring car series this year.
Nissan is bidding farewell to Maximilian Günther and Sébastien Buemi with its decision to engage an all-French tandem.
Günther’s future in the series is still uncertain. Buemi doesn’t have to worry about that at all. The Swiss, who is one of the few drivers to have competed in all eight seasons of Formula E, has signed with Envision Racing.
