Formula 1 has a record 23 races on the schedule this season, with the very first event of 2022 being the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. So what’s the schedule and where can you follow the entire race weekend?

The first race was held at the Sakhir circuit back in 2004. Back then, the race was dominated by both Ferrari cars, with Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello capturing the double.

So far, the Bahrain Grand Prix has only opened the F1 season three times, in 2006, 2010 and 2021. Lewis Hamilton (5) took the most wins, followed by Sebastian Vettel with four victories and Fernando Alonso three times.

This year the race will again be a classic fifty-seven laps, during which the drivers will drive a total of 308 kilometres. The fastest lap is still held by Pedro de la Rosa from 2005, who set a time of 1:31.447.

Bahrain International Circuit

The circuit itself is 5.412 kilometres long and consists of fifteen corners. It also offers 3 DRS zones for easier overtaking. The first detection point is located before the first corner, the second on the approach to turn 9 and the third at the penultimate corner, as you can see in the picture below.

But in addition to the detection points, you can also see the average speeds that the pilots achieve in each corner, as well as which gear they usually shift into in that corner.

A typical aspect of the Bahrain race is the difficulty in getting the monopost set up optimally, especially due to the large temperature fluctuations.

Bahrain Grand Prix – programme

The Formula 1 cars will take to the track for the first time on Friday, 18 March, at 1pm to be precise, in the first practice session (officially called Free Practice 1 – ed. note). This will last the standard one hour.

FP2 will start at 4pm on the same day. The third and final free practice is scheduled for Saturday, March 19, again at the same time from 1 to 2 pm.

At the stroke of 4pm on Saturday afternoon, drivers and teams will qualify for Sunday’s Grand Prix, which F1 has also scheduled to start at 4pm.

Bahrain Grand Prix – stream

Live coverage of the Formula 1 race can be watched on Sport 1 and Sport 2. There will also be internet streams and, last but not least, F1 TV, where you can switch to the onboard cameras of the individual drivers.

But F1 TV in particular also offers other features, namely livetiming and detailed telemetry. In addition to the full F1 programme, you can also watch press conferences or practice and qualifying sessions in Formula 2 or Formula 3.

Bahrain Grand Prix – odds

Will reigning champion Max Verstappen win? Or will Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes, Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari or Lando Norris in a McLaren beat him in the race?

Based on the data from pre-season testing, Red Bull and Ferrari look the best in terms of the balance of power. So will Verstappen confirm his role as the favourite?
