The former great talent of Dutch football Quincy Promes is in further trouble. At the Spartak Moscow training camp in Dubai he was arrested by the local police. However, it is not known if the arrest is related to his conviction in the Netherlands or if he will be extradited there.
Quincy Promes, who was previously charged with attempted murder by a Dutch court, had been hiding in Russia for several years. There, he was one of the best players in the local Premier League and a fan favourite.
An international arrest warrant has been issued for the player because he was involved in smuggling more than a kilo of cocaine into the Netherlands in addition to the attempted murder. Russian authorities, however, did not recognize him.
Spartak Moscow officials and Promes himself thus took a big risk last week.
The player flew with his team to the United Arab Emirates for a training camp. Even though the Netherlands has had an extradition treaty with them since last year. On his way back to Moscow, he was reportedly detained by customs officers at the airport and subsequently handed over to the police.
Where is Promes now and what is his future?
However, the current situation of the former Ajax Amsterdam or Sevilla player is not known to the public. The player’s current club refuses to comment on the situation on their official channels and in the Russian media.
However, many sources, including Russian media, deny any connection to his criminal past and possible extradition to the Netherlands. On the contrary, many media outlets in the Czech Republic and around the world are reporting on this connection.
However, it is not officially known whether he will return to Russia or whether the UAE authorities will extradite him to the Netherlands. If the latter scenario occurs, it could mean the end of Promes’ professional career. Indeed, a Dutch court sent him to prison in absentia last year for six years.
