Italy’s top flight will be preparing for a rule change next season that will not only prevent “masking by pitch” but also spice up the relegation battle a bit this season. So let’s go through the upcoming rule changes from the 2022/23 season.

The first is a strict ban on wearing green jerseys. In the past season, this “problem” mainly concerned Sassuolo players, who have a lot of green in their logo, and Lazio Roma, who went into away games wearing light green.

At the moment, we don’t know all the jerseys of the Serie A participants in the 2021/22 season, but the green colour dominates again only for Sassuolo players (and Juventus goalkeepers). So the team from the north of Italy will probably have to change their identity at least partially for the 2022/23 season.

Another change is the reduction of the number of participants to 18 and the addition of play-offs and play-offs at the end of the season. Currently, the Italian top competition has 20 participants, which means that although the bottom three will be relegated, only one team will go up from Serie B.

And if this situation repeats itself every season, it will be very difficult to return to the top tier again after relegation. That’s why it will be crucial to stay up next year.

And then there is the magic of the knockout stage, which is supposed to be a preparation for the change of rules in the Champions League from 2024. It is the play-offs that is something that many love and many hate. The best team can lose to the last advancing team and pack their bags for a holiday after dominating the entire regular season. At the same time, it can all be decided in the last game of the year, and even a mutual one at that.

How much of an impact the rule change will have on the Italian league, we won’t know until two years from now. Now we can only wait and guess how it will all turn out.
