Forget weight classes, the boxing world is in for a David and Goliath battle! The difference will be sixty pounds

The world of combat sports has clearly defined rules. Some of them concern what is or is not allowed to do during the actual fight in the ring, while other rules classify fighters into weight classes and it is always necessary for two opponents to have the same weight on the scales at a certain time before the fight. However, this rule loses weight in exhibition matches.

The world of combat sports has clearly defined rules. Some of them concern what is or is not allowed to do during the actual fight in the ring, while other rules classify fighters into weight classes and it is always necessary for two opponents to have the same weight on the scales at a certain time before the fight. However, this rule loses its weight in exhibition matches, and so it is rare to see a rather bizarre situation where two completely different characters face each other in the ring or cage.

Just such a battle is on the agenda the day after Christmas. As part of the Fight Night Challenge in Brno, giant Alexander Cverna will face lightweight boxing stalwart Michal Zátorský.

Their duel has earned the name David versus Goliath without exaggeration. There probably won’t be too many group photos where the fighter Alex Cverna doesn’t stand out with his massive physique.

The two-time national K1 champion and MMA fighter maintains a natural weight of around 130 kilograms. In contrast, twelve-time Slovak boxing champion Michal Zátorský is used to weighing between 60 and 70 kilos, exactly half of what Cverminator weighs. Still, he is confident about his gigantic opponent.

“On the domestic scene, nobody wants to fight me because they are afraid of my punches. That’s why I had to think and look to the higher weight classes,” said Zatorsky. “I told Attila (Végh, promoter of the Fight Night Challenge organization, ed.) that I’ll fight Cverna and he took it,” he added.

“At first I thought it was a joke, but then when I saw that Zátoro was serious, I thought, why not! You have to try everything and in combat sports there are obviously no limits,” smiles Cverna.

“I’m already looking forward to it, Michal is a nice guy, I appreciate him for such a challenge, we will surely put on a great war, so I hope that as many people as possible will come to see it,” Alex encourages the fans.

The FnC 3 tournament is scheduled for 27th December at BobyHall in Brno and already the combat sports community is discussing how such a fight could be held.

“Michal will definitely be running around, trying to knock me out and dance around me. But when I’m sparring guys at his weight, it usually only takes one well-placed punch and it’s over, and I see the same thing happening in our fight,” Cverna believes.

His opponent understandably disagrees. “Alex will want to push me at all costs and try to hit me, of course I will have to be careful because he is sixty kilos heavier, but there will be no pushing from his side because I am ready for it and I will not let him. I really have a lot of experience to know what to do with such a fighter,” Zátorský believes.

Cverna also competed in the organization’s first tournament last December. Again, it was a boxing duel and again with a much lighter opponent. His dance partner for this waltz this time was the then OKTAGON middleweight champion Samuel Pirát Krištofič.

“I have nothing to take from that fight, neither of them showed much at the time. I think I could teach both of them how to box, so they should watch me and take something from me when it comes to boxing,” says Zátorský confidently.

The Fight Night Challenge 3 tournament in Brno will also feature a duel between two giants of the domestic scene, former OKTAGON heavyweight champion Michal Martinek will face posturing legend Tomas Hron, rapper Patrik Rytmus Vrbovsky is going to fight another duel and there will also be a fight between two Slovak singers Dominika Mirgova and Aless Capparelli.

Václav Sivák, Robert Pukač, Marek Bartl and Michal Plesník will also show their fights to the Brno audience.
