Football has suffered! Netherlands were correctly denied the decisive goal, but fans’ opinions differ
The match between the Netherlands and France offered some nice football, but we didn’t see a few goals in the end. We only saw one goal and the referee called it off. According to the rules, he was right to do so, but opinions differ widely.
The match between the Netherlands and France offered some nice football, but we didn’t see a few goals in the end. We only saw one goal and the referee called it off. According to the rules, he was right to do so, but opinions differ widely.
Group D has already offered us 4 matches and the qualifiers are basically decided. France beat Austria in the first match and the Netherlands beat Poland, so both teams needed a point in their match.
The fans were expecting a nice football full of many chances and goals. However, they didn’t, it was more of a tactical battle where both teams were afraid of making mistakes.
In the end we didn’t see a goal and the match ended in a goalless draw, which suited both teams. The Netherlands, however, are rather unhappy, due to a situation in the 69th minute.
Xavi Simons got a shot off inside the box and aimed accurately. Together with his teammates, he ran to rejoice, but his joy didn’t last long as the situation was examined on video.
In the end, the goal was disallowed and the reason was Denzel Dumfries being offside near goalkeeper Mike Maignan. By the rules, he influenced him, but he could not have had the ball under any circumstances.
“I think Dumfries’ position was really offside, but he didn’t disturb the goalkeeper. But I’m rather annoyed that the referees needed five minutes to check it. I don’t understand that…” reacted Ronald Koeman after the game.
And there are many more similar opinions. So although the referee was correct to call off the goal according to the rules, the decision went against football itself. So the question is whether the rules should be changed slightly.
