The Florida Panthers took their first step towards winning the Stanley Cup on Saturday night at home, winning 3-0 in the series opener. The star of the game was goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 32 saves and kept a clean sheet, while his counterpart Stuart Skinner had only 15 saves on two goals.

Florida had a good start to the first game of the Stanley Cup Final, taking a one-goal lead after just four minutes. Carter Verhaeghe opened the scoring after assists from Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart.

Later in the game, the referees handed out several two-minute penalties. Five on the Panthers’ side, three on Edmonton’s side. The fans at Amerant Bank Arena got another goal at the beginning of the second period when Evan Rodrigues made it 2:0 for the home team.

Florida went into the third period with a two-goal lead, which was increased by Eetu Luostarinen five seconds before the final buzzer.

The goals were scored by Carter Verhaeghe, Evan Rodrigues and Eetu Luostarinen, while captain Aleksander Barkov contributed two assists.

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman were silent. But not because they didn’t create chances. But Bobrovsky simply caught the possible and the impossible. For example, for McDavid, he didn’t score for the first time in five games.

“We’re happy for the win, it was a fun game. Now we have to concentrate and be ready for game number two,” said Bobrovsky, the star of the game.

He is the first goalie to win a game in the finals at age 35 or older since Martin Brodeur did it in 2012. He’s also the oldest goalie to start a Final with a pick zero. He surpassed Patrick Roy (35 years and 233 days with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001).

And Bobrovsky was praised by his teammate Rodrigues, who scored his second goal of the night. “He was great tonight, he got us the win,” he said into the microphones after the game.
