The third Grand Slam of the season is fast approaching and the third-round matches, featuring the top 32 women tennis players, await us. And among these 32 there is also a large Czech representation. Let’s take a look at what matches await our players and what their chances are for a possible qualification to the eighth round.
The toughest lot is undoubtedly Kateřina Siniaková, who will face the world number one Ashleigh Barty. The Australian won her second round match against Russia’s Blinkova with a seemingly convincing 6:4, 6:3, her game was quite shaky at times and the world number one was far from a great performance.
Still, she is a clear favourite against Siniakova. The tennis players will play their first match against each other. The winner of this match will face the winner of the match with another Czech.
Anastasija Sevastova will face Barbora Krejcikova. Krejcikova has now won 14 matches in a row, has won a Grand Slam title and can be considered as the tennis player with the best form in the world. Unlike her doubles partner, Krejcikova will be the favourite, even though she is making her Wimbledon debut.
A tough match awaits Karolina Muchova. The nineteen seed must get the French Open finalist, Russia’s Pavlyuchenkova, out of the way. The two tennis players have already played 2 matches together, and this is the first time they are competing on grass.
Both on the Moscow hard and Madrid clay surfaces, Pavlyuchenkova was the winner. However, both were very close matches.
And finally, the Czech derby. Karolina Pliskova will be the big favourite, and she looks like she could regain her momentum and is winning again.
But she will be up against a very good Tereza Martincova. The Czechs have played one official match together, with Pliskova winning two tiebreaks in the first round of the US Open.
So we will have at least one Czech in the eighth round. But we believe that other Czech tennis players have a chance to advance and could get closer to the trophy that was last lifted from the Czechs by Petra Kvitova in 2014.
