Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova managed her Wimbledon dress rehearsal perfectly. In the final of the tournament in Eastbourne she defeated Latvian Jelena Ostapenko 6::3 and 6::2 and celebrates her 29th career title. The two-time All England Club winner became the first Czech to celebrate at Eastbourne since Jana Novotna in 1998.
Kvitova lost only one set in the entire tournament against Britain’s Boulter in the third round. The Czech did not play the first round due to a free draw, but in the second round she easily defeated Vekić of Croatia 6:1 and 7:6.
From the quarter-finals on it was a great Czech ride. the 32-year-old tennis player among the last eight beat another home player, Harriet Dart, to stop the undefeated Brazilian Haddad Maia in the semifinals.
Already in the semifinals, Kvitova’s strength was shown in Eastbourne. The Czech player didn’t lose her serve once in the whole match, in which she was a slight underdog according to the paper. But after a tough two-hour battle, she was able to enjoy her first final of the year.
In this one, it was the aforementioned beauty ride. Ostapenko couldn’t cope with the Czech’s great serve.
Kvitova, on the other hand, returned perfectly and quickly gained the break advantage in both sets. While in the first set the spectators saw one break, in the second the 32-year-old tennis player from the Czech Republic got to steal her opponent’s serve twice.
Today’s great performance is certainly interesting considering the Wimbledon that Petra Kvitova will start in a match against Paolini from Italy. If she manages to reach the title, she would follow up her successes from 2011 and 2014, when she also lifted the famous plate above her head.
