Abdallah Sima began to astonish Europe this time last year. Thanks to the goals he scored for Slavia in Europa League matches, clubs from the top leagues started to take notice of him and there was talk of offers in the tens of millions.
Since the winter, however, his form curve has basically only been declining. The main reason was the injuries that constantly plagued him in the spring part of the season. Nevertheless, he has made a great advertisement in the British Isles. His accurate long-range shot against Leicester seems to have burned deep into the memory of English fans. Ironically, it was almost the only game of the spring that went well for Sim.
The Senegalese speedster did not enter the new season in good form either. After an injury he was not able to endure more minutes and when Slavia dropped out of the Champions League, the management nodded to an offer from English Brighton.
The Seagulls, presenting attractive offensive football, immediately sent Sima on loan to Stoke City, in whose red and white jersey the stocky forward was supposed to collect minutes in the physically demanding second division. But that’s not what’s happening.
Even in his new surroundings, Sima hasn’t stopped being plagued by injuries and has only made the matchday squad for league games four times so far. Twice he came off the bench, twice he sat out the full ninety minutes. He has also played twice in the EFL Cup, otherwise nothing.
The turning point may have come on Monday, when the Senegal international made his first appearance since arriving. And twice. He scored in the 42nd and 48th minutes to give the Under-23s three points in a 3-0 win over Southampton.
With this win, Stoke jumped to second place in Premier League 2 Division 1, which guarantees promotion to the elite. We will see if the successful match will open the door for Sim to the A-team or if we will see him in the matches of the 30.
