Filipe Luís apologises to Di María: Agüero told me to throw him off by talking about his wife. Angel, I’m sorry
Part of football has always been to try to challenge the opponent and somehow upset them. But sometimes it’s over the line. Filipe Luís remembers one such situation, when he once tackled Angel Di María.
Part of football has always been to try to challenge the opponent and somehow upset them. But sometimes it’s over the line. Filipe Luís remembers one such situation, when he once tackled Angel Di María.
Filipe Luís has played for Real Madrid, La Coruña, Chelsea and Flamengo in his career, but he made his biggest name at Atlético Madrid, where he spent eight long years.
As a result, he was part of Simeone’s rebellion and the title in 2014, and played in two Champions League finals. At the time, City’s derby with Real Madrid was probably the most volatile and the Brazilian left-back sensed that.
“I will open my heart about what I regret the most in my career. If there’s something I regret a lot and if I could turn back the clock and not do it, it’s the duel against Angel Di Maria,” Luís said on the Charla Podcast.
“I came to Atlético Madrid and we played against Real Madrid. Kun Agüero told me to upset Di María, that if I talked about his wife he would be completely out of the game. So I came to Di María and I told him your wife blah blah blah, I called him names, I repeated his wife’s name… He looked at me completely shocked. I was beating him in fights the whole game and he really didn’t play a good game,” Luís recalls.
Di María, I’m sorry
It wasn’t exactly a nice gesture from Agüero as Di María’s teammate in the Argentina national team. It didn’t help Atlético anyway, Real Madrid won 2-0 thanks to goals from Khedira and Özil.
“But I came home after the game and I regretted it a lot. Di María, I’m so sorry for that, my friend, I’m so sorry I did that to you,” the 38-year-old Brazilian, who recently retired from football, said.
This is not the first time Agüero has fallen out of favour with the fans. During Argentina’s World Cup victory, he mocked 20-year-old Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga in the booth during the celebrations and deliberately slapped his name on a man’s privates.
