The World Cup in Qatar is due to take place this winter and Russia is preparing to play a barrage match against Poland. The winner of that match would face the winner of the Czech Republic and Sweden for qualification.
However, the Polish national football team has refused to play against Russia. The Czech and Swedish national teams agreed to do the same. Thus, two situations could have arisen.
The first possibility, which the Czech Republic, Sweden and Poland had hoped for, was that Russia would be eliminated from the qualification. The second possibility was that if these national teams refused to play, Russia would advance to the final tournament without a fight because it would have no opponent.
During Sunday, FIFA representatives met to discuss the Russian national football team remaining in qualification. The meeting concluded that Russia will not be excluded for the time being. It now depends on whether the situation in Ukraine improves. If this does not happen, the exclusion of the Russians will be reconsidered.
However, a few measures have been taken. FIFA has banned international football matches in Russia, the Russian national team can only play under the acronym of the Russian Football Federation RFU, they cannot use the Russian flag or anthem, and they must play their home matches on a neutral pitch and without fans.
