FIFA President: the Super Bowl is played every year, so why not the World Cup every 2 years?
Which football matches and tournaments bring in the most money? The World and European Championships. FIFA would like to maximize its profits and organize a world championship every two years. The organisation’s president Gianni Infantino has even compared it to the Super Bowl.

As things stand, the European Championships are held every four years, and the World Cup too. So there is always a tournament one year and a year off the next. It makes sense for the reason that the players also need to rest sometimes, plus when the championships aren’t as frequent, they are more rare.
But FIFA wants to change that. Just for the sake of maximizing profit, it wants to make the World Cup every two years, giving the players a World Cup every year after the end of the season. In practice, this means that they would almost never have a day off and there would be a huge overload of players.
Thibaut Courtois, goalkeeper for Belgium and Real Madrid, spoke out against this after the Nations League. In his view, Fifa and the Uefa are all about money. A World Cup every two years is nonsense, he says, because they do not think about the players at all.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino, however, sees it differently. He believes it is a good idea and is trying to push it through at all costs.
“The Super Bowl is played every year, so why can’t the World Cup be played every two years?” the Spanish daily El Partidazo de Cope quoted Infantino as saying.
But Infantino is comparing the incomparable. The NFL is played for four months, the rest of the year the players have a year off or prepare for the new season. In football, players often have only three weeks off a year, so they are in action for more than 11 months.
Moreover, the Super Bowl is the culmination of the club season, so it is more comparable to the Champions League, which is also played every year.
