Fernando Alonso: My future in Formula 1? I prefer Alpine, but I won’t put a gun to anyone’s head
Will Fernando Alonso stay with Alpine for next season? Or will he head elsewhere and will Oscar Piastri actually join Esteban Ocon? Alonso’s future is likely to be decided by the mandatory summer break, while the driver himself prefers to stay with his team. His future could be decided in 10 minutes.
The legendary Spanish driver and two-time world champion’s two-year contract with Alpine F1 ends after this season.
Although the latest speculation seems to suggest that Alonso will, at the very least, turn down an offer from his team for a new contract, no concrete decision has been made.
In fact, Alpine is also currently considering the deployment of Oscar Piastri, who is currently the best driver without a commitment. Piastri simply has to ride already, and the question is what team that will be. The transfer merry-go-round seems to have been kick-started by Sebastian Vettel, who has announced that he will retire at the end of this season.
However, it is Piastri who has been linked with an engagement at Williams where he could learn his trade. Moreover, Williams would get a fast driver, at least for the next year or two, who could bring the team the coveted points.
Another question mark hangs over who Piastri would have as his stablemate, with Alex Albon also without a contract for another year and Nicholas Latifi’s future also uncertain.
But back to Alonso. He has declared ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place this Sunday, July 31, that he is only focused on continuing with his team. Alonso also expects all negotiations to be swift.
After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Formula 1 will have a mandatory summer break and it is during this time that Alonso’s future will likely be decided.
Alonso’s statement
“Me and the bosses will be on holiday at that time, so we have to make some video calls or whatever. But when two parties want to agree on something, it takes ten minutes,” said Alonso, quoted by Motorsport.
“When two parties disagree on something or fight to agree on something, then maybe one of the parties is not happy. So whatever I want to talk about, it won’t take more than ten minutes,” the 44-year-old Spaniard continued.
But Alonso is clear that Alpine is moving forward and the driver himself has noticed the progress. “I would like to stay here, but as I say, there are always two sides and I’m not going to put a gun to anyone’s head,” explains Alonso.
“My priority is to be with the Alpine team because we have been working on this project and developing it together for two years. We are becoming more and more competitive,” he concluded.
