More tough news for Real Madrid. Another absentee joins the injured Aurélien Tchouameni, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez. However, Ferland Mendy will miss Real Madrid longer than everyone else. And the management is running out of patience.

Ferland Mendy is one of the best left backs of our time in terms of defensive ability. However, he has huge gaps offensively, he provides virtually no support to the attack and Vinícius is often alone on the left wing.

Add to that Mendy’s constant injuries and Real Madrid management is running out of patience. Thus, talk has started in the Spanish media that Real will release the left-back on the transfer list in the summer.

Mendy picked up his latest injury in Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Atlético Madrid and with David Alaba also injured, centre-back Eduardo Camavinga has had to fill in at left-back. He played a very decent game and started here on Sunday against Real Sociedad.

But Mendy’s diagnosis is worse than expected. The French defender will miss over 2 months, roughly 10 weeks to be exact. He will thus miss a crucial part of the season, where Real will face a demanding schedule and in one week will play Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals, Atlético Madrid in La Liga and Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. At the same time, he will miss the Club World Cup.

During Mendy’s four seasons at Real Madrid, the 27-year-old fullback is injured for the ninth time. And eight times it was due to a muscle problem. He’s been out for 300 days. It’s the severity and length of his absences that worries Los Blancos management.

Last season, Mendy missed four games due to muscle injuries and missed a total of three months. He played 35 games out of 56 (62%). In 2020/21, Mendy missed 123 days due to a shin injury that kept him out for 3 and a half months. In the 2019/20 season he was out for 2 months and played 32 games out of 51 (63%).

So there is not much reliance on Mendy’s health and Real Madrid have to figure out what to do about it. Allegedly, the return of Frano García, the club’s offspring in the service of Rayo Vallecano, has already been arranged for the summer. Real have a €5 million pre-emption right on the 23-year-old left-back.

There is also talk in Spain of interest in Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, but this is just speculation for now. It is not certain whether and under what circumstances the German outfit would be willing to let their star go.
