As previously announced, Fenerbahce decided to boycott the Turkish Super Cup. They sent their juniors to the match and they left the field in the first minute. The club is also considering leaving the Turkish league. What’s behind this?
Fenerbahce has recently been unhappy with the way the management of the local football association has been operating. It has asked for a foreign referee to officiate the Super Cup because its representatives felt it had been hurt recently.
Similarly, it wanted the match rescheduled because it was facing a tough double-header in the European Conference League. However, both requests were denied and the club decided to boycott the match.
So it sent an under-19 team to the match with the sole purpose of playing and then leaving the pitch. Mauro Icardi scored in the first minute and the match was over.
The young players left the pitch and the match had to be abandoned. Galatasaray were thus able to celebrate a valuable trophy, although the fans who travelled to the match were probably not entirely happy with what they saw on the pitch.
Fenerbahce tackles Turkish league exit
Fenerbahce’s anger at the Turkish federation is so great that there is speculation about them pulling out of the competition. Currently, the situation is being intensively resolved and it is still uncertain how it will all play out.
In the event that the end in the competition is agreed, the club will apply to neighbouring countries to join their competition. Greece, Bulgaria or Romania are under consideration.
