An extremely interesting duel awaits us in the last quarter-final of the Australian Open. The dark horse of the tournament Félix Auger-Aliassime will challenge the favourite Daniil Medvedev, how will the match turn out?
The ninth player in the ATP rankings Auger-Aliassime had a breakthrough season last year. And he’s building on it this year. He was especially successful in the second part of the year, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and even the semifinals at the US Open.
At the Australian Open, which is currently underway, he has been in great form since the quarter-finals. His best performance came in the 1/16 final when he blew away Britain’s Evans 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1. He also did well in the eight finals against the giant Cilic, whom he defeated 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 and 7-6.
Only 21 years old, the Canadian is a great promise for the future of world tennis, but he is already making his mark. Unfortunately, the luck of the draw is not in his favour, and he will face the tournament’s biggest favourite Medvedev in the quarter-finals. But if he has a day, nothing is impossible.
The Russian tennis player has no problem so far, in his four matches so far he has allowed only two sets to his opponents, one to Kyrgios and one to Cressy. The second-ranked tennis player is thus rather struggling with the surrounding influences.
At first he complained about the boos of fans on his person, which eventually turned out to be a celebration of the “Siiiuu,” which is the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. He also disliked that he didn’t play the eight-final match against Cressey at Rod Laver Arena.
“What more can I do to play center court? I’m second in the rankings, I won the last Grand Slam...” Medvedev didn’t understand. To top it all off, he complained about the abbreviated bathroom break, which he said is a stupid rule.
Despite all the difficulties, Medvedev is the clear favourite for the duel. The two quarter-finalists have faced each other three times, with the 25-year-old Russian winning each time. First in 2018 in Toronto 2: 1, then at the US Open in September 2021 3: 0. They last faced each other recently, on January 8, 2022 in the ATP Cup preliminaries. Medvedev won very quickly 6-4 and 6-0.
Therefore, it can be expected that Medvedev will have no problem with the Canadian tennis player now. Auger-Aliassime is indeed a great talent, but the Russian tennis player is even a bit higher.
