Morocco’s footballers are preparing for Tuesday’s friendly against Peru in Madrid, but their concentration was broken by a hotel employee who made several racist comments. Police have already arrested him.
Madrid city police on Monday arrested an employee of the Eurostars Madrid Tower hotel who was accused of posting racist comments on his Instagram profile against the Moroccan national football team, which is staying at the hotel, police sources told EFE.
“The Moroccan national team at the Towers, they’re terrible fuckers. F*cking Arabs. F*ck their Ramadan and their whole family.”
The Moroccan national team is staying in Madrid, where they will play Peru on Tuesday at 21:30 at the Civítas Metropolitano stadium, where Atlético Madrid play their home games.
A hotel employee posted several photos of the Moroccan players on Instagram, to which he captioned
There is a big problem between the citizens of Spain and Morocco. In fact, Moroccans are the most common immigrants in Spain, with 776,000 Moroccans living here. Thousands more are in the country illegally. In addition, Moroccans congregate in cities and have a high crime rate, so they are not at all popular with Spaniards.
The hotel employees were reported to the Madrid Metropolitan Police by the hotel management itself, and on the night of Monday to Tuesday the police arrested the hotel employees directly at the Eurostars Madrid Tower. He is accused of making racist comments and spreading hatred.
The coach’s reaction
But it was with great detachment that Morocco coach Walid Regragui took the situation.
“The players are very affected, as are the people of Morocco. But I don’t think we should go on with it, he is a young boy and he will learn from it. Now with social media there are a lot of kids who are lost. There is racism in life, but I think it’s more of a social issue than a one boy problem. He’s a boy who will have a life after this and I don’t want to ‘kill him,” Regragui said.
“We are Muslims and in our religion we are taught to forgive. We will forgive him and let him learn from this matter. Maybe he will be an example for other people to be careful when they post on social media. The best example we can set is to forgive him, let him know he made a mistake and let him learn from it, let him see that what he thinks about Muslims is not good,” the Morocco coach added.
