Ansu Fati was supposed to be Barcelona’s generational talent and Lionel Messi’s successor. But injuries have slowed him down a bit and he is currently at the tail end of the Culés attack hierarchy. His father, Bori Fati, is so very upset with the way the 20-year-old is being treated at Barcelona.

Ansu Fati started playing for Barcelona at the age of 17 and has worked like a miracle. He matched up a lot with Messi on the pitch, he was incredibly mature for his age and Barcelona seemed to have another gem.

He racked up eight goals and one assist in his first season in 2019/20, and he had an even better start to the new one, managing to score four goals in seven games and adding a 1+2 record in the Champions League. But then came the cursed knee injury that sidelined Fati for a year.

After his return he played a couple of games, but again had to go on sick leave for a few months. Since the end of last season, he has been playing regularly, but he hasn’t got back to his old form yet.

Barcelona, however, gave him Lionel Messi’s number ten and he was to be the face of the club for the next few years. So why is he making so few appearances?

“Good question, ask Xavi. I don’t have the answer and he as a coach will have his reasons. I, as a father, am angry. Seeing Ansu play so little annoys me, but sometimes I think like a father, not a coach,” said the player’s father, Bori Fati, in an interview with El Partidazo de COPE.

“I called Mateu (Barcelona’s sporting director). I think we deserve much more. After all, we are talking about Barcelona’s top ten. Before the injury he was playing with Messi, Suárez, Griezmann and Ansu was starting. Tell me which strikers in Europe are better than those,” Bori Fati doesn’t understand.

Leaving?

Last time in El Clásico Fati came on at the last minute, before that in Bilbao he came on with 8 minutes to go. Overall, he was in only 35% of the starting lineup this season and played only 40% of the possible minutes.

“I’m annoyed with what’s happening. He’s your La Masia footballer, he got the number ten after Messi when there was no one else to take it. I’m annoyed at the way Ansua is being treated in terms of minutes. One minute, then two minutes, then three minutes, it really makes me mad,” complains the player’s father.

In Spain, there is also loud talk about Fati’s possible departure from Barcelona. Either from the point of view of the club, which would like to get rid of him, or from the point of view of a player who would like to play regularly somewhere. How does he see Bori leaving?

“Talking about it, Ansu says he doesn’t want to leave Barcelona. I think differently. I want to see Ansu succeed. Where do I see Ansu in the future? I often think a lot about Sevilla,” the father of the 20-year-old footballer surprised.

It was from Sevilla that he left for Barcelona at the age of 10. In the Andalusian club he would have had plenty of room to develop his potential and return to his best form, but the vast majority of Blaugranas players have not returned from loan spells to earn a permanent place in the first team.
