Monaco came to Leverkusen in excellent form. They have not lost since the return of club football after the World Cup. In fact, it has only lost once in nine matches, and that was on penalties in the Cup.
Otherwise, the Princes can boast six wins in their last nine matches. It has also won its last three matches and at the weekend it beat PSG 3-1.
Leverkusen are having an embarrassing season, but are slowly picking up under Xabi Alonso. Adam Hložka has started to do well, but the return of Patrik Schick, who was suffering from health problems, is awaited.
Against Monaco, only Hložek started in the starting line-up, Schick was on the bench from the beginning. However, both of them had to bite a bitter moment. Leverkusen didn’t manage to start the game at all.
Not so much Leverkusen, but rather its captain and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky. At the age of 33, he made a mistake that would put a goalkeeper at a much lower level to shame.
He got a little home, only to work the ball senselessly towards his own goal and it took him so long to get the ball back that Monaco striker Breel Embolo was able to attack him.
Hradecky thus scored an own goal in the 9th minute of the match and didn’t exactly help Leverkusen twice.
