Fantasia! Tomas Machac dominated the tournament in Traralgon
Tomáš Macháč could not have entered 2022 better. The twenty-one-year-old Czech player dominated the opening tournament of the season, setting him up well for the upcoming Australian Open. Will he build on his performance?

In 2021, Tomas Machac first came to the attention of tennis fans. Last February, he made his Grand Slam debut when he fell in the second round of the Australian Open after a sympathetic performance against world No. 7 Berretti of Italy.
Although he did not feature at the French Open, Wimbledon or the US Open, he ended the season at 143rd in the ATP rankings. This was mainly due to his triumph at the Nur-Sultan Challenger, where he gave his opponents no chance.
The Beroun native has already managed to replicate his feat from last year. At the beginning of the season he conquered the event in Traralgon, Australia, which served as a dress rehearsal for the Australian Open, which is approaching fast.
In the first round, Macháč met Harold Mayot, who crashed out in the third set with an unfavourable score of 1:4. Afterwards, the coach Daniel Vacko’s ward had no major problems with the home team’s Akira Santillan.
In the quarter-finals, the tennis player, who had scalped Evans and Gasquet, lost the only set in the whole tournament. It was Kazakhstan’s Kukushkin, who lost 6:2 in the deciding set.
In the semi-finals, Machac continued his dominant performance and knocked out Dutch tennis player Jesper De Jong. In the final, he took on the twenty-eight-year-old Fratangelo, who beat, among others, Jiri Lehecka on his way to the final.
Machac added 80 points to the ATP rankings, which will move him up to 130th on Monday and improve his career best. Next week, he will face an unpredictable AUstralian Open qualifier.
