After Bremen was relegated from the top German competition, the future of Jiri Pavlenko was discussed. According to the English media, the Czech goalkeeper is now in Chelsea’s sights. Petr Čech, a consultant of the sports and technical department in the London club, could take care of his engagement.
Jiri Pavlenka joined Werder Bremen in July 2017. For this transfer, Slavia received €3 million from the German club, which is about €76 million in Czech crowns.
The twenty-nine-year-old native of Hlučín did not need a long time to acclimatise at Werder as he immediately became the team’s number one. In four years, he played 135 games in the Bundesliga, keeping a clean sheet on 25 occasions.
However, the 2020/21 season was not at all successful for the team led by coach Florian Kohfeldt. He scored 31 points, which was only good enough for seventeenth place. Only Schalke 04 did worse, with 15 points less.
However, the performance of goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka was still at a very high level. The Baník Ostrava graduate held his teammates in many situations, but it was not enough to save the German elite.
It is therefore quite possible that Czech football will no longer be represented in Werder Bremen in the coming season. Theodor Gebre Selassie has returned to Slovan Liberec and Pavlenka has asked for a new contract.
According to the English media, he has even been on the radar of Chelsea in London. The last Champions League winner could be looking for a replacement at number two, as there is talk of a possible departure in connection with Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The German media also came up with the same information. According to Transfermarkt, the price of the national goalkeeper is around five million euros, which is an acceptable amount even under the current circumstances.
Petr Čech, who knows Jiri Pavlenko well and serves as an advisor in the sports and technical department at Chelsea, could also play a role in this. If this transfer takes place, the Czech Republic would already have four players in the best league in the world.
