Jiří Lehečka finished the 2022 calendar year at 81st place in the ATP rankings. Since January, however, he has moved up considerably and is now undoubtedly among the wider elite of men’s tennis.
At the Australian Open, he successfully made it to the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas. He did, however, scalp Cioric, Auger-Aliassime and Norrie.
He continued his great form. In February, he played the semi-final in Doha, and against Murray he could not convert even one of the five match balls offered.
Another major success was the eighth round at Wimbledon. He beat Ofner, Cerundolo and Paul on grass. However, in the eighth round he had to abandon the match in an unfavourable 0:2 sets to Daniil Medvedev.
The twenty-one-year-old chose Winston-Salem as a dress rehearsal for the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the current season. Apparently, it was the right choice.
The native of Mladá Boleslav will play his biggest final ever on Saturday night. So far he has only ITF and Challenger titles to his credit.
Lehecka defeated Krueger, Koepfer and Purcell on the American concrete. Sebastian Korda injured his ankle and he reached the final without a fight. In the final he will challenge the better of the pair Čorič-Baez. The Czech tennis player will definitely not be without chances, moreover, he might have more physical strength.
Moreover, it is already clear that Lehecka will reach a new career high. Before the start of the tournament, he was 35th on the ATP ranking, now he will move to 30th place at worst. If he manages to dominate the whole tournament, he would be ranked 26th.
Before the start of the US Open, this is definitely a big encouragement. In the first round, he faces the unpredictable Russian Aslan Karatsev.
