In a country popular with Czech tourists, there is no bigger match than the derby between Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb. Split’s Poljud Stadium can hold just under 34,000 fans and was hopelessly sold out over the weekend.
The great tifa and the scenery in the stands tend to be of no less quality on Croatian soil in these matches than in other European footballing powers. The clash between these rivals tends to be one of the most tumultuous on the continent.
Fortunately, the last match was without any serious clashes between the two camps. On the contrary, the fans confirmed the prestige of the match and put on a great show in the stands before the opening kick-off!
And it was not only the activity in the stands that led the home side Hajduk to take all 3 points after Emir Sahiti scored the only goal of the match in the 59th minute.
Split continues its dream start to the season. After nine games, coach Ivan Lek’s charges have a full 21 points.
Dinamo Zagreb is sitting in 3rd place in the league table with one match to play. However, the start of the new season has already gone sour a month before the derby.
To the delight of Czech football enthusiasts, the team from the Croatian capital failed to make the last Europa League preliminary round, when they had to concede their place to Sparta Prague.
However, Sergej Jakirovic’s team will visit our country at least one more time, namely in the group stage of the Europa Conference League. The match will be hosted by Viktoria Plzeň on 9 November at the Doosan Arena.
