Whether we will see a race in Sochi, Russia, in the F1 World Championship this season is currently unclear.
F1 itself released a statement on Thursday morning saying that it is following the situation in Ukraine very closely, but has not yet released any further comment or official confirmation on the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix. Discussions on the subject have, however, already taken place in recent times.
However, if the management of the queen of motorsport decides to keep this Russian event on the calendar, it will probably not be able to count on some drivers. Meanwhile, this year’s race in Sochi was to be the last, with the original plan being to race in St Petersburg in 2023.
Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel, for example, has been vocal. “It’s terrible to see what’s going on. If you look at the calendar, we have one race to run in Russia this year,” Vettel told The Race.
“It’s bad to race there, my opinion is that I won’t go there. I feel sorry for the innocent people who lose their lives and are killed for stupid reasons. There’s something we’re going to talk about, but the GPDA meeting hasn’t taken place yet,” the Aston Martin driver explained.
Vettel’s words are backed up by current world champion Max Verstappen, who says he is absolutely shocked and is joining the boycott.
The two pilots are then joined by double champion Fernando Alonso, who trusts the Formula 1 management and hopes they will react correctly. However, it is not just the opinion of these three drivers, the findings of other performers are also leaking out.
In short, the current situation cannot be ignored in any area. So, in your opinion, should the Russian Grand Prix take place this year?
