At the end of last year, Jiri Lehecka was already showing us world-class tennis. He defeated Alexander Zverev, then reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Now he has another scalp under his belt, he managed to beat Russian Andrey Rublyov in Doha. For the first time in his career he has become a member of the elite ten of the world ranking.
The 25-year-old Russian is ranked fifth in the rankings and was even the top seed at the Doha tournament. Lehecka lost the first set 4::6, but then picked himself up.
He dominated the second set by 6:4 and the third set by 6:3, with all sets lasting 34 minutes. After less than two hours, Lehecka was done and could celebrate.
“I’m very happy with the victory and I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” said the Czech tennis player after perhaps the biggest win of his career.
He equalled his best, having reached the semi-finals a year ago in Rotterdam. However, he is not finished in Doha, he will have a chance to push his best even further on Friday.
His opponent will be thirty-five-year-old British Andy Murray, who defeated Alexandre Muller 2-1 in sets. However, he is only behind Lehecka in the rankings, at 70th place.
