Ex-PSG boss: Mbappé has shown by his behaviour that he can’t lead a team. He’s not a leader, it’s hard to build a team around him

Kylian Mbappé is one of the best players of today. But he’s also a footballer whose behaviour is a bit of a detriment. The former PSG sporting director, Leonardo, has now come down hard on the Frenchman.
It’s boiling over in Paris. And once again, the future of Kylian Mbappé is being discussed. The French footballer is getting on the nerves of not only the fans, but also the management with his hesitation.
While all last year he flirted with Real Madrid to finally sign an extension for huge money just before his contract expired, after only a year he made it clear to the management that he will not extend his contract this time and will leave for free next year.
Moreover, he has further baffled the club’s board with his recent statements, where he let it be known that he doesn’t know what PSG should do to win the Champions League, as that is a question for the board. He also added that playing for PSG doesn’t help him much as it is a fractious club.
Leonardo, the former PSG sporting director, couldn’t take it anymore and remotely lashed out at Mbappé. The Brazilian official first served in that capacity from 2011-2013, then returned to the Parc des Princes in 2019 and was sacked in the summer of 2022 after the eight-final fiasco with Real Madrid.
“With his behaviour in recent years, Mbappé has shown that he cannot lead a team. He is a great player and a great goalscorer, but not a leader. It is difficult to build a team around him,” Leonardo told L’Equipe.
“For the good of PSG, I think it’s time for Mbappé to go, ” the Brazilian added. “He’s been in Paris for six years and five different clubs have won the Champions League… and none of them have had Mbappé in their team. That means it is perfectly possible to win it without him,” says Leonardo.
Mbappé has a contract at PSG until 2024, but he has already told the management that he will not extend it and would like to leave for free. However, the Parisians do not want to let that happen, as it would not only make a big mess of their books, but would also be seen as an embarrassment.
Thus, the management will try to sell Mbappé over the summer, while the player still says he wants to finish his last year at the Parc des Princes. Practically the only possible destination is Real Madrid, so it will be interesting to see what course of action Florentino Pérez takes.
