Dana White’s Contender Series is the path to UFC glory. Matej Peñaz has now made it to this show, so he can fight for a contract with the famous organization in front of Dana White.
However, Peňáz has only been in professional MMA for a year and a half, so his chances have surprised many. One of them was Octagon promoter Ondrej Novotny, who said he would rather wait a year.
Coach André Reinders, however, sees it differently and believes that his charges will succeed on August 30 and move into the wrestling elite.
“The offer came also because Peñáz has been in professional combat sports for a long time, for example he had a successful career in kickboxing. And when an offer comes from something you aspire to, it’s hard to turn it down.
Even though a lot of people say it might be too early, I still believe Matej can succeed in the UFC,” Reinders said in an interview with Sport, admitting that he didn’t expect the offer himself. The opponent is already known, but still not officially.
Fans will have to wait. How does the famous coach see Peñaz’s chances of winning? “I see them very well, because Matej is extremely strong in his stance, where I believe he can compete with anyone in the world. He’s catching up very quickly with the MMA side of the fight, meaning defending against takedowns, ground work and other things.
I always say that every fighter has to have a weapon in their fight that they can use to beat their opponent, and Matej has a very good one. I believe that he already has that level,” he added.
