On Thursday, dozens of European and European Conference League qualifying matches were played. In addition to the shameful results of the Czech teams, three Slovak teams were also in action. How did they fare?
The first match of the third preliminary round of the Europa League was played by Slovan Bratislava. The Slovak champions won 3-1 against Gibraltar’s Lincoln, with one goal from Czech international Jaromír Zmrhal.
Two other Slovak teams played in the European Conference League. Spartak Trnava won a valuable 0:0 draw at home against Maccabi Tel Aviv, but an extremely difficult rematch awaits in a week’s time.
Žilina managed their match very well. Tobol Kostanay from Kazakhstan was a bit more active in the match, but did not score, while “Shoshoni” scored in the first half and took home a 1:0 win.
Žilina are close to qualifying for the last round, where they would face the loser of the Celtic Glasgow vs. Jablonec double-header. Given the Scottish team’s 4:2 win on Thursday, it looks like a Czechoslovakian derby.
In other interesting matches, Copenhagen only drew with Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1:1, Trabzonspor played Molde 3:3 and Bodo Glimt unexpectedly fell to Kosovo’s Pristina 1:2.
Full results can be found on the UEFA website, with the rematch to be played in a week’s time.
