European Cup Final in the Czech Republic? A candidacy is being considered!
Czech fans witnessed a historic moment in 2013, when Eden hosted the UEFA Super Cup final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Since then, only Czech teams have played European Cup matches domestically.
Czech fans witnessed a historic moment in 2013, when Eden hosted the UEFA Super Cup final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Since then, only Czech teams have played European Cup matches domestically. But watch out, the return of the final match is possible!
First we need to clarify which European Cup the Czech Republic might be interested in. It is neither the Champions League nor the Europa League, we do not have a stadium with sufficient capacity for that in the Czech Republic. Only the newly formed and lowest-performing European Conference League gives us a chance.
Petr Fousek, the chairman of the FA, informed that the FAČR is considering a bid to host the final match. It could be in 2023 or 2024. If 2023 prevails, the Czech Republic would host the final match after ten years.
Which would make the finals look like a great achievement. After all, we have to admit that our stadiums look like their younger siblings compared to Europe.
The big problem for hosting such big matches is the capacity we can offer. Our biggest Sinobo Stadium (Eden) has a capacity of 20 800 spectators.
This year’s European Conference League Final will be played in Tirana (the capital of Albania) and yes you guessed right. Even the stadium here boasts a higher capacity than the biggest stadium in the Czech Republic. Arena Kombëtare has a capacity of 22,500 seats.
