Slavia Prague will enter the next stage of the knockout stage of the Europa League today when they take on Feynoord Rotterdam at 18:45. Nigeria’s Yira Sor is the one on whom the attention of the Slavic fans is focused. Will he be successful this time too?
Slavia Prague has high hopes for the talented Sor
He is struggling in the league and exploding in Europe. That’s how you could describe the twenty-one-year-old Sor’s time in the jersey of Slavia Prague. The former Baník player could have ended up at Letná, but Sparta failed to come to an agreement with his employer and their old rivals from Slavia arrived on the scene.
After the transfer, coach Jindřich Trpišovský spoke about his interesting potential, but at that time he did not know how his words would be confirmed. “He is exceptionally equipped with speed and running, a classic winger,” Trpišovský assessed his new charge at the time , according to the club’s website. “He’s been in Europe for a year, of course there is still work to be done with him, but he has very interesting potential,” he praised the young player.
In Europe, Sor is unstoppable, in the domestic league he is struggling
After a slow start in the league, the youngster jumped into European competition and immediately attracted a lot of attention on the scene. First, he showed great form in a double-header with Turkish side Fenerbahce Istanbul, where he was on the scoresheet for four of Slavia’s six goals, contributing a lot to the Prague side’s progression to the next stage of the ECL.
In the eighth round against Austrian LASK Linz, he shone again when he tormented the opponent’s defence with his speed and scored three times in the double-header. After only four games, he is fighting for the top scorer in the European competition and is two shots short of topping the scoring statistics.
It’s a much different story in the domestic competition. The defences of Slavia’s league rivals play mostly in a deep block, which probably doesn’t suit the fast-footed Sora that much. He is still waiting for an accurate shot in the Fortuna Liga in the jersey of the Sešiovans, and he has already played 297 minutes.
In Rotterdam, the prayers of the Czech fans will be directed to the Nigerian player and hopefully he will make it this time too. In Europe, the young footballer is attracting a lot of attention and reportedly English and Spanish teams are starting to circle around him.
