EURO got to know its complete line-up during Tuesday evening. The incomplete groups are now complete and everyone knows their opponents in the main groups. The evening matches were dramatic until the last seconds.
Georgia – Greece
Georgia played against Greece for their first major tournament since independence from the Soviet Union. After a fairly unspectacular 120 minutes it was the turn of penalties, which in the end went better for Georgia.
On the Greek side 2 shooters hesitated, while on the other side only one. The black mark on the progress is the injury of the star Kvaratskhelia. Georgia will complete the group with Czech Republic, Turkey and Portugal.
Ukraine – Iceland
Ukraine probably entered the match as a slight favourite, after all on the other side we would be looking in vain for players like Zinchenko, Mudryk or rising star Dovbyk. In the 30th minute, however, Gudmundsson froze the home fans with a shot from outside the box. The Icelandic striker, who plays for FC Genoa in Italy, gave the goalkeeper no chance. For a long time, the Ukrainians were looking for a recipe against the solid Icelandic defence.
Everyone in the satdion rejoiced at the goal after the change of sides. In the 54th minute, Tsygankov headed the ball into the middle in the style of Arjen Robben and with a shot to the back post, he levelled the match. In the 84th minute, Sudakov found Mudryk on the edge of the penalty area and the winger, who is based at Chelsea London, turned the match score around with a shot to the back post. It was a goal that Iceland could hardly react to.
Ukraine will complete Group E at the summer championship, where they will play Romania, Belgium and Slovakia. For coach Rebrov’s team, the group is certainly playable. The Ukrainians could be one of the dark horses of the whole tournament, they have a team with enough quality to do it.
Wales – Poland
As the pre-match odds might have suggested, there wasn’t much to watch in the Wales-Poland duel. In total, the players produced 24 shots in 120 minutes, but only 3 went on target and all 3 were covered by goalkeeper Szczesny. Moreover, the Polish goalkeeper became a hero when he blocked Dan James’ penalty in the final series.
Despite a very shaky qualification, where they lost 2-0 at Letná in the 10th minute, or lost to Moldova, the Poles are celebrating their qualification to the final championship. However, the team around Robert Lewandowski is facing one of the toughest groups with France, the Netherlands and Austria.
Wales have experienced a big football boom since EURO 2016 in France. A semi-final at the aforementioned tournament, then missing the bit to qualify for the World Cup in Russia and another participation in EURO 2021. Last but not least, we must not forget the participation in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, with the end of Gareth Bale’s career, the ability to qualify for major tournaments for the whole country may have ended as well.
