The European Championship is slowly knocking on the door. Each team has announced their rosters and the final details of tactics and starting elevens are being fine-tuned. Together, we take a look at the top striker candidates who will be vying for the goal scoring crown. There are several candidates, so let’s give each of them at least a few lines.
Harry Kane (England)
The Spurs striker had a great year from a personal point of view, scoring an impressive 23 league goals, to which he added 14 assists, making him both the top scorer of the entire competition and the player with the most assists.
It is him that Albion will rely on in the final stages of the campaign. With the support of wing players like Sterling, Sancho and Foden and others, he should be one of the main favourites to win this individual award.
Kylian Mbappé (France)
Acceleration, speed, calmness in finishing and technical prowess – these are the main weapons of the French striker. With the support of the wide and quality squad that France possesses, the chances of the still only 22-year-old Mbappé are really high.
A lot depends on what position on the pitch he will be given, whether he will play right on the tip or rather from the wing. However, he will be dangerous from anywhere and it will be interesting to see if he follows up his 27 Ligue 1 goals and 8 Champions League goals.
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)
He missed out on the crown for the king of goalscorers in Italy’s Serie A, but at the Euros, both Belgium and Lukaku himself will be aiming for the highest. A midfield line full of constructive players will no doubt supply their number nine with plenty of passes and centres, and it will be up to Lukaku what number of opponents’ accounts he burdens.
He has virtually everything a player in his position needs these days. Despite his undeniable physical strength and his ability to keep two opposing players on his back, he is capable of developing high speed and technical finishing.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
The Portuguese superstar has already proven on several occasions that he is still a force to be reckoned with. Despite the Old Lady’s unsuccessful season, he has managed to amass 29 goals, which has once again earned him the top spot in the goalscoring table.
Although Ronaldo is no longer brimming with the ability to cross over one or two opposing players and has lost some of his mobility, he is still capable of deciding important matches in the penalty area. In particular, he uses his ability to be in the right place at the right time and his unrivalled leap and timing.
Robert Lewadowski (Poland)
Poland may not be one of the teams to warm up for the tournament for any extended period of time, but Robert Lewandowski is definitely a force to be reckoned with. After a highly successful season in which he broke Gerd Muller’s record with 41 league goals, the Polish striker will be ready to face another challenge.
That is to qualify from the group and thus to the quarter-finals of the European Championship. The group containing the teams of Spain, Slovakia and Sweden looks playable. Let’s see how the Polish killer will do.
Ciro Immobile (Italy)
Another candidate who could be aiming for the top scorer of the tournament is Italian international Ciro Immobile. It is he who should pull coach Roberto Mancini’s offensive line. The Lazio Rome captain has been performing brilliantly this season and has managed to score 20 goals and assist 6.
Hard work and reliability in finishing will be qualities that the Squadra Azzurra will be able to rely on thanks to Immobile. With the support of Insigne and Berardi, it will be interesting to see how far this team will be able to go.
Other candidates could be Karim Benzema, Alvaro Morata, Antoine Griezmann or Memphis Depay. Whoever the top scorer is, let’s just wish for one thing, and that is that the tournament will offer us a lot of eye-catching and unusual moments that we will remember for a long time.
