Erling Haaland shattered records in yesterday’s Champions League match, scoring an incredible five goals in just one hour. He broke Manchester City’s 94-year-old record and also overtook Kylian Mbappé in the goal-scoring race. But he was denied another milestone by manager Guardiola.

Erling Haaland shattered records

If anyone doubted the advancing in the Champions League eight-final rematch between Manchester City and RB Leipzig after the draw in Germany, the Norwegian megastar led them astray. For Erling Haaland had an unforgettable night at the Etihad Stadium yesterday.

From the opening whistle, he showed that the defenders of the Bundesliga’s third team would have a tough day at the office that evening. His predation and the perfect interplay of Pep Guardiola’s team meant that the Norwegian forward scored a hat-trick in the first act.

His cannonade continued after the change of sides, as he managed to split the net twice more for the desperate visitors’ goalkeeper Janis Blaswich. The Leipzig players must have breathed a sigh of relief when Guardiola decided to withdraw him from the field in the 63rd minute. The 7-0 victory sent his team into the quarter-finals.

Yesterday’s performance broke the club record and Mbappé’s milestone

Erling Haaland impressed the whole of football Europe with his performance, but he also achieved important records. The Norwegian international has already scored 39 goals in all competitions this season, a number not achieved by any other Manchester City player in their more than 140-year history.

The previous record was held by Tommy Johnson, who scored 38 goals in the 1928/1929 season. But that wasn’t the only milestone he surpassed in last night’s game. His five goals dethroned another young star of world football, Kylian Mbappé.

He became the youngest player to reach the 30-goal mark in the Champions League at just 22 years and 236 days old. Mbappé reached that mark at 22 years 352 days. But to the Norwegian star’s credit, the fact that he managed to do it in just 25 games is an impressive feat.

But he was robbed of another record by manager Guardiola

It is Haaland and Mbappé who are two of the most electrifying players in world football today and they look destined to become the natural successors to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

It is the Argentine star’s record-breaking performance that has been denied him due to Guardiola’s substitution. No player has ever scored six goals in the history of the millionaire competition. “I told him (Guardiola) when I left the pitch that I wanted to score a sixth goal. But what can I do,” Haaland admitted to BT Sport of his slight disappointment.

“If he had done that at just 22 years old, he would have been bored in the next stage of his career,” Guardiola responded with exaggeration , according to Sport Bible. “I didn’t know about Messi’s record with Leverkusen (Messi also scored five goals against the German side in 2012). Usually when someone scores a hat-trick, I substitute them after about an hour because the match is over,” he explained his decision.
