Eriksen repays Brentford’s trust and helps the club to a quiet rescue. He’s unbelievable, I want him to continue with us, says Thomas Frank
Brentford’s first ever season in the Premier League was, of course, looked forward to by all the club’s fans, but also many others. Very attractive football was expected from a well run team and the Bees delivered. Moreover, it looks like we will see them in the Premier League next season as well. A significant part of this is also due to the January signing Christian Eriksen.
Perhaps few expected to see the Danish midfielder back at the highest level so soon after his collapse at the Euros last year. However, Eriksen showed great determination and proved to the football world that he is not planning an early end to his career just yet.
Due to Serie A rules, he couldn’t continue in the Italian league due to an implanted cardiover-defibrillator, but he didn’t have to wait long for a new engagement.
He was given a helping hand by Brentford, where Eriksen must feel at home. Besides the Danish coach Thomas Frank, there are 6 Danish players in the team.
However, his arrival in the newcomer to the Premier League had of course also sporting reasons. Bees had a problem with creating chances, they lacked the brains of the game.
So when they offered Eriksen a contract until the end of this season in January, it seemed like an ideal (if a bit risky) move for both parties.
And it still looks like that. Although Brentford dipped into the relegation fight due to poor form at the start of the year, winning just one league game in January and February, they have now kicked on and won 3 of their last 4 games.
And Eriksen is a big part of that. When he made his first start in the starting line-up, he helped in the important 3-1 win over Norwich. His corner was the first goal and Brentford won a penalty.
Against Burnley, he was also instrumental in the win. First, he sent a precise centre into the box to Toney, who headed the winning goal, and the same duo then scored the 2:0 goal. Eriksen sent Toney through on goal and he first fought and then converted the penalty.
And the Danish star also put in a great performance in the historic 4-1 win over Chelsea. He created 3 chances for his teammates, but most importantly scored his first goal for the club when Mbeumo presented him with a great ball on the counter attack. Eriksen’s goal was also the winner.
“Christian is unbelievable, he is a top player and brings quality and calmness to the team,” praised his charge after the game Thomas Frank. “I know him very well and I know he can enjoy being present. I think that’s exactly what he’s doing right now.”
“At the moment we are not thinking about what will happen in the next few months, we are just happy to have him. But it’s no secret that I want him to continue with us next season.”
Will Frank get his wish? Eriksen will be a free agent after the season and there will undoubtedly be interest. He’s still a first class player and he’s thriving in the Premier League. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United and Tottenham are already interested in him.
