Erik ten Hag and a disagreement with another player? Raphael Varane reportedly wants to leave. Will other stars follow him?
Manchester United have had one big problem after another lately. One time it is the performance, the other time it is the wide squad, which is troubling many teams at the moment. And, problems on the pitch aside, there are problems off the pitch. For example, the Jadon Sancho scandal. At the moment, the media is spreading rumours that Raphael Varane might have a problem with the Dutch coach.
Varane in a dispute with the coach?
The whole situation actually started innocently enough. After a slight injury, ten Hag decided not to put Varane in the starting lineup against Sheffield. Subsequently, the French stopper played the entire Champions League match against Copenhagen, which United won narrowly 1: 0. In the last moments of the match, André Onana converted the opponent’s penalty.
The key turning point came on the day of the derby match with Manchester City. The latter Hag pointed to the Maguire – Evans pairing, Varane did not intervene in the match, even though the Red Devils defence was burning like paper. At the post-match press conference, reporters asked the Dutch coach about the move and got a clear answer from him, ” I preferred Evans to Varane for tactical reasons.”
In the next 2 Premier League games Varane played just 13 minutes. Only one minute at Fulham and 12 minutes on the pitch he got against Luton. In the aforementioned matches, the starting line-up consisted of Maguire – Evans or Maguire – Lindelof.
” When you have to decide between two great players like Varane and Maguire, you just have to decide.“
All this at a time when the media are already speculating that the relationship between ten Hag and Varane is basically at a standstill and the Frenchman is likely to leave the team in the winter. According to GOAL, the French stopper has had a falling out with ten Hague over his low match load and wants to leave in the winter.
Previous problems with players
However, this is not the first similar situation in the Manchester cabinet. The Dutchman has turned his back on Ronaldo, and in effect de Gea, as unlike Onana, he doesn’t have good enough footwork. Jadon Sancho was the latest such player to be reprimanded by the Hag for poor performances in training, something the Englishman disagrees with.
What do all these players have in common? In terms of positions on the pitch, nothing at all. All of the above are or were high salaried players. Cristiano Ronaldo was on £550k a week, de Gea £375k a week. So it was Raphael Varane who entered the new season as United’s highest paid player with a salary of £350k a week(SalarySport). Who is 2 positions below? If you’re guessing Jadon Sancho, you’re right. The Englishman is paid £275k a week.
A few months ago, Zlatan Ibrahimovic added a few words to the Ronaldo or Sancho controversy. It’s a club that works with the best talents in the world, there are no stars. So what is his experience? Working with talent, it’s different from working with stars. “
So if Erik ten Hag has any problem with highly paid players in the Manchester United cabinet, Casemiro, Martial or Bruno Fernandes will be next in line.
