Erik ten Hag defends the erring André Onana: He’s done great so far, he’s the second best goalkeeper in the Premier League

Manchester United have continued to struggle this season, and that is the case with number one goalkeeper André Onana. He is under fire from critics for the big mistakes he commits quite often. However, coach Erik ten Hag has once again defended him.
Since the beginning of the season, there has been talk that Manchester United is in a big crisis. Not only in the Premier League, but also in the Champions League. However, if you count only the last five league games, the Red Devils have the second best form in the English top flight.
On the week, however, Erik ten Hag had to worry again about what his charges were up to. Twice against Turkish side Galatasaray they were two goals up, yet the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Before the last match in the Champions League group, they are in last place in the group with four points, second Copenhagen and third Galatasaray have one point more.
It’s worth noting that against Galatasaray, the misfiring Andre Onana sunk his team for the umpteenth time this season, a goalkeeper who was supposed to take Manchester United to a new level after the end of David De Gea. But the opposite is rather true.
The mistakes that the Red Devils’ summer signing has made since the start of the season have spawned all sorts of compilations and jokes on social media. Unfortunately, they overshadow the games in which, for example, the African goalkeeper has given solid performances, even if those games are fewer than perhaps the Hag would have liked. The Dutch coach, however, stands up for him.
Erik ten Hag has a protective hand over Onana
Fans, legends and pundits alike are not completely sparing André Onana. But even his defenders sometimes put themselves in the position that it wouldn’t hurt to put the goalkeeper on the bench to get a break from all the pressure, the attention, the criticism.
But Erik ten Hag has a protective hand over his charge. He always stands up for him, always protects him. After all, he knows him very well. He managed him at Ajax. At his instigation, Manchester United paid 50 million euros for him, which now seems like an insane amount.
And now the former coach of the Amsterdam giant has once again defended his star. “If you analyse it well, you will see that Onana is the second best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on statistics, in the stats of goals scored he is the second best in the Premier League,” the BBC shared his statement.
“He’s doing great. He knows he made some mistakes in the Champions League, but he has done very well in the first five months. Plus you could see how he reacts to a bad performance. For example, after the Munich game he was outstanding against Burnley. He’s a strong personality, he’ll cope,” added the Hag.
Onana has played 20 competitive games this season, netting 33 goals and keeping a clean sheet 7 times.
