The whole of Great Britain mourns the death of Queen Elizabeth II. And the Premier League, which has cancelled the entire weekend, will pay its respects.

“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In honour of her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League round of matches, including Monday night’s match, will be postponed,” the Premier League said in an official statement.

This weekend, we will miss the matches Manchester City – Tottenham, Arsenal – Everton, West Ham – Newcastle or the London derby Fulham – Chelsea.

The matches have been postponed indefinitely. In England, there are quite contradictory opinions about this decision, while some praise the show of respect to the Queen, according to others, there was no need to postpone the matches, especially because of the demanding schedule, which is also quite full because of the World Cup.

The government has also joined in, saying there is no need to postpone the matches. Yet the Premier League management decided otherwise.

“As our longest serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy of dedication. This is an incredibly sad time not only for the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her and we join all those who mourn her passing,” said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.
