England’s strength doesn’t scare us, Shevchenko believes in his team and wants to see Ukraine in the final!
Ukraine is gaining the sympathy of many people at the European Championships and now faces another big task, which, if it succeeds, will go down indelibly in the history of Ukrainian football.
Ukraine is gaining the sympathy of many people at the European Championships and now faces another big task, which, if it succeeds, will go down indelibly in the history of Ukrainian football.
The knockout stage of the European Championship is already something unknown for Ukraine. However, after Artem Dovbyk scored the winning goal moments before the end of extra time, uncontrolled celebrations broke out at Hampden Park and indeed across Ukraine.
And it must be said that the team led by Andriy Shevchenko definitely deserves it! They are reaping praise for their relentless fighting style and also success, much like they did with Hungary. Most football fans are so pleased that the “boring and immobile” football of the favourites is not celebrating success at the expense of these outsiders.
Moreover, Ukraine certainly does not want to accept this success so far, but wants to go further! “We are not scared of their strength, ” Shevchenko told a press conference, going into the quarter-final against England with great confidence.
And why should he? The former Ukrainian striker has achieved great success and there is no one in the football world who does not respect him. Moreover, he has also built on his successful career as a player and coach.
He has already led Ukraine to 51 matches, 25 of which ended with his team winning (13 draws and 13 losses). The Czech national team, which lost twice to them in the autumn of 2018, could also tell a story about Ukraine’s strength.
Confidently, but with humility!
“England is a great team, they have a very strong bench, an excellent coaching team and we are fully aware of how tough the game is going to be. It’s incredibly difficult to push through against them. But that motivates us, because everything is possible in football, ” says Shevchenko.
And that everything is possible he has learned several times. Perhaps the best example is the Champions League final match between AC Milan and Liverpool, when the Ukrainian striker, whose missed penalty meant defeat, lost a three-goal lead to his teammates and was left with nothing but tears.
The English are, of course, big favourites to reach the semi-finals. But as Shevchenko rightly said, anything can happen. If Ukraine puts in another fighting performance and luck is with them, just like with our national team, we will play each other in the semi-finals.
