Scientific studies have shown that headers are harmful to the human body. Footballers are at a many times higher risk of developing dementia than the general population.
In England, a limit on the number of headers per training session has already been introduced. Head for change has played a significant role in this.
This organisation supports former athletes who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases. It also advocates for greater head and brain protection in sport.
Famous footballers in English history such as Nobby Stiles, Jackie Charlton and Bobby Charlton have battled or are battling dementia, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
26. september will see the first official match played without any headers. Headers will only be allowed in the first half and not at all in the second half. Any infraction of this rule will be taken as a foul.
The football public in England hopes that this rule will not only reduce the risk of brain disease but also make the game more attractive. Sunday’s game will be a first glimpse, but perhaps it will be followed.
