England had other big coaching names on their radar, including Ancelotti. We don’t have strong English candidates, thinks former national team player
The England national team has finally announced a new head coach in Germany’s Thomas Tuchel. Shortly after the announcement, he was criticised by the English national team fans, purely because of his nationality. However, it has now emerged that England wanted a big name at any cost, with Carlo Ancelotti also in the crosshairs.

- The new coach is German Thomas Tuchel
- But the England national team had another big name on their radar
The England national team will now be led by the truly capable German coach Thomas Tuchel. He has become one of the most respected coaches on the planet thanks to his previous stints at Bayern, PSG and Chelsea. So he’s moving from the club scene to the national scene.
As a coach, he has won the Champions League, the Bundesliga, the Club World Cup, Ligue 1, the German DFB Pokal, the UEFA Super Cup, the French Cup and the local League Cup and Super Cup. If he excels at anything, it’s the way he can prepare his teams for tournaments.
It must be added that England needed a quality and experienced coach like salt. Gareth Southgate has not done too badly in terms of results, but he has come under criticism for his play, poor nominations, conservative moves or lack of courage.
What’s more, Southgate hasn’t won anything with the England national team. It is Tuchel who may indeed be the final piece to the jigsaw that will decide a great future full of success. But the German coach is now facing criticism from the fans.
For a simple reason – he’s not English. But England really needed a big name, or still does. It has come to light that if the former Chelsea or Bayern manager did not work out, the national team had one more big name in its sights.
Ancelotti and Guardiola are also in England’s sights
If he wanted to, current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti could move from the club scene to the national one. Gary Lineker, as a former star of the English national team, has also revealed that talks have also been held with Pep Guardiola.
“I have confirmation that they approached Pep Guardiola in the summer and also spoke to Carlo Ancelotti,” said Lineker, who was quoted by Britain’s Daily Mail.
“The thing is we don’t have a strong enough English candidate to take the job,” added Micah Richards, responding to criticism over the selection of a German coach.
“That’s one of the most interesting things. I was of the opinion that you don’t need an English manager, you just need to step up and get the best person for the job. I think Tuchel is an excellent manager and a proven winner.
There are so many questions that need to be answered. We have to agree that he is a winner wherever he comes from. He can be the difference between winning and losing,” the former footballer added.
